Frequently asked questions
Is there a charge for the first call?
No. The first call is always free.
Is hiring Eximius worth the cost?
For most solo and small firms, yes. You pay only for the hours your project actually takes: no salary, benefits, recruiting, training, or downtime. And because our work can typically be billed to your client at a higher rate than it costs you, outsourcing research and writing can increase your firm’s revenue while freeing your time for the work only you can do.
Do you offer a reduced rate for ongoing work?
Yes. If your firm sends us work every month, our Preferred Client Rate gives you a reduced hourly rate for that volume. You commit to 20 hours per month (about 5 hours a week), and every hour of work that month is billed at the Preferred Client Rate, including any hours beyond the 20. Preferred clients also get priority scheduling, so their projects move to the front of our queue. It runs on a monthly cycle. Ask about it on your first call.
What if the project takes longer than estimated?
We'll tell you before we go beyond the estimate. If the scope changes, for example if additional issues surface or the record is larger than expected, we'll discuss it with you before doing additional work.
Are revisions included?
Revisions are not included in the initial estimate. They're billed at the same hourly rate, and we'll let you know the expected time before we make them.
What is your turnaround time?
Our normal turnaround is 5 business days or less, but this always depends on the project and our workload. Whatever the timeline, we deliver with enough time for you to review the draft, request changes, and review the revised version before you file. We'll confirm a delivery date before we begin. If you need something sooner, we offer a priority rate for tight deadlines.
Can you work with a tight deadline?
Yes. Tell us your deadline on the first call. For tight deadlines, a priority rate of an additional $50 per hour applies (appeals are quoted case by case), and we'll tell you before we accept the project. If we can meet your deadline within our normal schedule, there's no extra charge.
Do you work with attorneys outside Florida?
Yes. We support attorneys in federal court and in other states. Hearing and deposition coverage and mediation support are for Florida cases only.
How do you check for conflicts?
Before every engagement, we ask for the names of all parties and check them against our current and past matters. If there's a conflict, we tell you right away.
How do you keep my client’s information confidential?
Your case is handled only by our team. Everything you share stays with us and is used only for your matter.
Can I bill my client for your work?
Yes. Many attorneys bill our work to their clients as part of their legal fees, often at a higher rate than they pay us. In Formal Opinion 08-451, the ABA confirmed that a firm may add a surcharge to outsourced legal work billed as legal fees, provided the total charge is a reasonable fee for the services. But if you work on contingency, no markup is allowed. The opinion also notes you may need to tell your client about the outsourcing, and in some cases get their consent, so check the rules in your jurisdiction.
Do you work directly with litigants or self-represented parties?
No. We work only with attorneys, who remain counsel of record. We typically do not communicate with litigants unless our attorney clients request it.
